Synopsis: “At a time of pox and plague, two of history’s most legendary women—Elizabeth I of England, and Mary, Queen of Scots—will meet face-to-face, with the fate of three kingdoms, two religions, the head of the latter, and the soul of the former at stake. Schiller’s take on the final days of Mary Stuart explores the lengths to which women must go in order to gain and maintain power in a patriarchal world through a poetic, provoking, and heartbreaking exploration of agency, love, lust, passion, fanaticism, and the seemingly impossible challenge of balancing personal freedom with political responsibility.
In a production that bring the play’s themes into sharp contemporary focus through a spectacular and stylized interpretation of Elizabethan England, Mary Stuart features innovative costumes by John Pennoyer which draw inspiration from fashion designers Alexander McQueen and Gareth Pugh, and sets by Katherine Jenkins Ryan that recall the work of theatre and opera visionary Robert Wilson. The production has been imaginatively conceived, adapted, staged, and presented to adhere to strict safety protocols in order to reimagine a 2500-year-old civic art form for the surreality of our current moment.”
